Application Received
There are two parts to the citizenship application process:

Part 1 – Confirmation of Canadian citizenship of the adoptive parent(s)
Part 2 – Adoptee’s Application

The Case Processing Centre in Sydney, Nova Scotia has received your application Part 1 – Confirmation of Canadian citizenship of the adoptive parent(s). Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada officials will review the application, the required documents and citizenship fees to ensure they meet the minimum processing requirements.

Application In Process
The Case Processing Centre (CPC) will complete the necessary steps to determine if at least one of the adoptive parents is a Canadian citizen.

If it is determined that at least one of the adoptive parents is a Canadian citizen, the CPC will send you a decision letter by mail to advise you when and where to submit Part 2 - the Adoptee’s application.

Once you have submitted Part 2 of the application, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada officials will verify the application to ensure that the adoption has been approved by the province, territory or country of residence of the adopted person and that it meets the requirements of the Citizenship Act and Regulations.

An interview with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada officials may be required during the process. Should this be necessary, you will be notified about the time and place of your interview.

Application Withdrawn
If you wish to withdraw your application, you must advise us before a decision on your application has been made.

Applicant Notified
You will be notified by mail about the decision on your application for Canadian citizenship.

If the requirements for Canadian citizenship are met, the adopted person will be granted Canadian citizenship and will receive a citizenship certificate.

If the requirements for Canadian citizenship are not met after the assessment of Part 1 – Confirmation of Canadian citizenship of the adoptive parent(s) or Part 2 – Adoptee’s Application, you will be informed in writing.
